Project CGRO COMPTEL EGRET Publications Links Interna (restricted access) Impressum	The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory The NASA Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory was launched in 1991. It surveyed the gamma-ray sky for successful 9 mission years. In 2000, the spacecraft was destroyed, after failures of gyroscopes were considered a longterm risk of uncontrolled reentry. The mission goal was to explore the gamma-ray sky with wide-field-of-view instruments in the energy range from hard X-rays (~100 keV) up to high-energy gamma-rays (~10 GeV). For this purpose, four telescopes covered different energy ranges and objectives. Specific targets were gamma-ray bursts, pulsars, active galaxies, nucleosynthesis sources, and cosmic-ray related gamma-ray emission. The MPE was involved in two of the major instruments, COMPTEL and EGRET.
