COMPTEL on The
Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory
The COMPTEL telescope was the
middle
instrument on the Compton
Gamma-Ray Observatory. COMPTEL has been a collaborative project
by the four institutes:
- MPE Garching, Postfach 1312,
D-85741
Garching, Germany (PI Schönfelder)
- SRON
Utrecht, Sorbonnelaan 2, NL-3584 CA Utrecht, The Netherlands (Co-PI
Hermsen)
- Space Science
Center,
University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824, USA (Co-PI
Ryan)
- Astrophysics Division, ESTEC,
NL-2200 AG Noordwijk, The Netherlands (Co-PI Bennett)
The CGRO Observatory was operated by
NASA/GSFC (1991- 2000). The COMPTEL telescope operations were made from
the New Hampshire group of the collaboration through NASA/GSFC. Data
from COMPTEL were captured by NASA and transferred to MPE for initial
processing. Analysis of the data
is being done by the four collaboration institutes, using the COMPASS
analysis
system.
The COMPTEL 9-year mission database continues to be a major resource of
astronomy in the MeV energy range of gamma-rays, and will probably
remain record holder for the achieved sensitivity (about 10^(-5)
ph/(cm^2 s)) and for large-scale imaging for many years. Major results
on MeV sources are collected in the 1st COMPTEL source catalogue (Schönfelder
et al., Astron. Astrophys. Suppl. Ser., 143, 145-179 (2000)).
Local project documentation and
utilities and collaboration-wide information sources at MPE:
COMPTEL
is described in detail in a paper by Schönfelder et al., 1993, APJS
86, p 657-692
