Gamma-Ray Astronomy at MPE

- CGRO EGRET -

Welcome to the EGRET Home Page !

So here we are.

EGRET - Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope - is a spark-chamber instrument aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, capable of imaging gamma-rays. It is designed to cover the energy range from 20 MeV to about 30 GeV. EGRET uses a multilevel thin-plate spark-chamber system to detect gamma-rays by the electron-positron pair production process. The calorimeter using Nal(TI) is placed beneath the instrument to provide good energy resolution over a wide dynamic range. The instrument is covered by a plastic scintillator anticoincidence dome to prevent triggering on events not associated with gamma-rays. The combination of high energies and good spatial resolution in this instrument provides very good source positions.
