Gamma-Ray bursts are caused in extremely energetic explosions of probably very massive stars.

The study of GRBs at MPE has many facettes:
red button Detecting Gamma-ray bursts: MPE has built the INTEGRAL-ACS which detects roughly 1 GRB every two days. ACS light curves of GRBs are used in the IPN network to triangulate their position.

red button Operating the most recent GRB detector: Together with MSFC/USA, MPE has built the burst monitor GBM for the Fermi mission.
red button MPE participates in the Swift mission in various ways: Calibration of the XRT at PANTER, and developing software for the analysis of BAT data.
red button MPE is operating a dedicated 7-channel camera GROND for rapid follow-up observations of GRBs with the 2.2m MPI/ESO telescope in La Silla (Chile).
red button An up-to-date list of localized GRBs is maintained at href="http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~jcg/grbgen.html with a collection of all detailed observation reports (GCN) and reprints (astro-ph).
