Discovery of X-rays from the K Impact of Comet Shoemaker Levy on Jupiter

[ROSAT PSPC Images - Impact of Shoemaker-Levy on Jupiter]

The Aurora emission of Jupiter has been measured with ROSAT several times. On the occasion of the impacts of the fragments of the comet Shoemaker-Levy on July 13 - 22, 1994, an extended ROSAT observation campaign was performed. During the impact of the fragment K a significant increase of the X-ray intensity was revealed at the northern Aurora zone.
