ROSAT Detection of Protostars

[ROSAT PSPC Images of Protostars]

Low-mass pre-main sequence stars are born in collapsing clouds. Very young protostars are optically invisible and are usually discovered by infrared observations. They are Infrared Class I protostars and evolve into T Tauri stars (Class II). X-ray emission of three such Class I protostars has been detected by ROSAT in the CrA Coronet Cluster. The sources are highly variable and their soft X-ray emission appears to be absorbed by the strong circumstellar environment. The emission mechanism is as yet unknown.
