3. Dermatologische Klinik und Poliklinik der Universität Regensburg

The Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Regensburg joined the collaboration in 2009. After the first promising results of decreasing the bacterial load on chronic wounds and thereby achieving faster wound healing by low-temperature Argon-plasma therapy, a phase II study was started at the University Hospital Regensburg. To examine the antipruritic effect of cold plasma, patients with pruritic diseases were also included in the clinical trial.

In this study, randomized wounds or itching skin are treated for 2 min daily with the plasma device MicroPlaSter Beta, built and tested by ADTEC Plasma Technology Co. Ltd., Hiroshima/London. This plasma application is implemented as an 'add-on-therapy' in addition to the standard therapy.

Particularly in dermatology, a wide therapeutic potential of cold atmospheric plasma therapy is expected because of its physical properties, such as fast and efficient disinfection, treatment of chronic or acute wounds, skin infections and skin regeneration. Multidisciplinary research – from bench to bedside – is essential in instituting plasma application into medical practice.
