Data Analysis   Arrow up Back to Basic Research

Introduction

The Complex Systems Group is a division of the Theory Department at MPE that is actively working in the application and development of novel data analysis techniques for a variety of problems arising in different fields of research as for example medicine, music recognition, etc. The methodologies mainly use and combine elements taken from the theory of non-linear dynamics, complex system, and statistical physics. They are dedicated to unveil and characterize patterns in data for the sake of classification. For instance, as a result of a collaboration with the Universitätsklinikum Regensburg, an image processing technique has been developed that helps dermatologist identifying malignant melanomas in time. This effort resulted in the invention of a dermatoscopic workplace device ''DermoGenius'', which is already in use in several hospitals and medical practices.

The Plasma Medicine Project offers a wonderful opportunity for the application and further development of advanced data analysis techniques.

The main purpose of the analysis is to assess the efficiency of the plasma treatment. This is expressed in terms of accelerating the actual wound healing process, reduction of bacterial infections and avoiding other complications during wound healing as for instance inflammations of the skin.

As a multicenter clinical trial, data provided by the various institutions have to be analysed and compared. Then, a reliable and effective data analysis program must comprise a number of important steps:
  • Setting standards for data acquisition and data pre-processing
  • Image characterization and analysis
    • Skin wounds
    • Nitrocellulosis filter imprints
  • Statistics and visualization of the wound healing process
  • Data Mining
